Meet our Tutors
The Missing Piece Tutoring was officially founded in 2024, though Patty had been doing private tutoring off and on since 2017. She decided to form a tutoring company when she realized she wanted to do more private tutoring and less tutoring for other companies. She also wanted to be able to bring her daughters into the tutoring business, as well as start joint adventures with other teachers; none of which she could do if she was working for other companies.
Patty chose the title “Missing Piece” because many times there is what we call in the education world a gap, that once filled, everything starts to make sense. This to her is like a puzzle. Once you find the piece that was holding up the puzzle, everything starts to fall into place. Finding the piece isn’t a magical fix or cure that happens overnight. Just as lost learning, or falling behind, doesn’t happen overnight. Learning takes time, but once we figure out the piece, we can start to build out the rest of the pieces. Sometimes, tutorees need a couple of months and they are confident to go off on their own, and sometimes, they may need a couple of year or more. Each person is an individual, and so an individual plan is created. Even tutorees who join groups have an individual plan. They are watched by their tutor, and if the group is not fitting them, they are outgrowing the group, or when the group ends, new plans are created. There is never a one size fits all plan, which is the beauty of tutoring vs. the classroom where we must make everyone fit into the one size plan as much as possible.
Whqt makes The Missing Piece Tutoring unique is that it is run by a teacher not someone that is untrained or unattached to your outcome. If your tutor is not a teacher, they are being monitored by a teacher, and the teacher will check-in with you from time to time. Additionally, we have ties to many other tutors, who are also licensed and practicing teachers. So even if we can’t help you, we can definitely make sure a qualified tutor is available to help you. We are passionate about learning and even more passionate about ensuring individuals are being met where they are in their learning journey!

Patty is the lead tutor at The Missing Piece Tutoring. She specializes in the Science of Reading, which simply put, is helping put the pieces of the puzzles together for a struggling reader. She does this by determining what missing pieces, gaps, there are with each reader, and then starts to put those pieces in place for readers. Using the world renowned Orton Gillingham method, Patty can start making progress quickly, even with those who have been told they will never read. Read more about the Orton Gillingham method. Patty also leads the other team members in supporting math, writing, and homework help.
Some part of Patty always knew she wanted to become a teacher, and after a high school class that allowed her to spend time in her best friend’s parents’ classrooms, it was solidified that she was born to teach. She went onto college and was a rare exception at her private college in Iowa to be accepted into their education program as a freshman. She graduated college in 1997, knowing she wanted to move to Colorado and work with students in Title One schools. Thus began her teaching career of over 13 years. During that time she has taught all subjects in 4th and 5th grade, literacy and social studies (history, humanities) in 6th grade, and reading intervention for 6th – 12th graders. She has spent 5+ years studying the Science of Reading, becoming certified in Letrs and Orton Gilligham, among other training to support her learning and growth and knowledge in the subject. She is passionate in helping struggling readers become confident and understanding they can read. She has worked with students with significant learning disabilities, second language learners, and students who just haven’t mastered the art of reading.
Patty is the mother of 5 children, 2 of whom she was gifted through her ex-husband. She had 3 of her own children with him, which she was blessed to take off 13 years with. Her oldest daughter is graduating in 2025 with a degree in Sociology and Criminology. Her middle daughter is studying Elementary Education at Iowa State. Her son will be graduating high school in December of 2024 and has current plans of pursuing a career as an electrician. She has been gifted from her oldest stepson, a professor at Vanderbilt University, a granddaughter. Her youngest stepson is a nurse. She is also a proud dog mom to 1 year old puppy, Maisy May, a shih tzu pug mix who spends her days wanting to have toys thrown for her and getting into puppy trouble. She also spends lots of time having her grand pups with her, Izzy and Toby. When she is not spending time with her kids or being run crazy by the dogs, she likes to read, go out to experience all the activities Colorado has to offer by spending time with friends, and indulge in some Netflix binging so if you know of any good shows, Patty is always looking for new shows to watch.

She spent as much time as she could volunteering in her mom’s school exploring the different grade levels and learning from the teachers in the schools., She is currently studying Elementary Education and is set to graduate in May 2027 with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Iowa State University where she received the George Washington Carver Scholarship, a full tuition scholarship.
